Seven small Islands on the Arabian sea on the
west coast of India were a home to fisherfolk. The islands were ruled by several
kings and passed on from empire to empire. The British decided to develop a
natural harbour into the city. Mass reclamation took place and the islands started
to be connected together. This was Bombay – the Portuguese phrase ‘bom
bahia’ meaning ‘good bay’. In 1997 the name was changed to
Mumbai (‘Mumba’- a local hindu goddess and ‘Ai’ meaning
mother).
