A majority of Mumbai’s unskilled labour live in very poor housing
areas called ‘zopadpatti’ or slums. All able members of families
living in such slums leave home early in the morning in search of work and
return late in the night. During this time their children are neglected.
These children are then exposed to all kinds of social evils that are prevalent in such slum communities due to lack of education, control and parental guidance. Though there are enough Government run schools catering to such children, yet there is a poor attendance due to lack of motivation and follow-up. The Day Care Centres run by IMCARES in three slums of Mahim, Dharavi and Charkop cater to such children. The pre-school activities conducted in each of these centres have 400 children between the ages of 4-10 attending daily. Here, committed teachers give them basic education, recreation, one set of clothes a year, and a wholesome mid-day meal. The study classes run in the mornings and afternoons cater to older children who go to schools. The quiet atmosphere and ever helping teachers aid such children to improve in their studies. IMCARES invests into these precious children wisdom and knowledge knowing
fully well that the children will benefit from rich dividends. Because
of the Day Care Centres, we have seen many parents have got their toddlers
admitted in nearby schools and encourage their older children to complete
their education. As a result there has been an evident change in the community.
As children are growing with education and the fear of God, these communities
are becoming a better place to live in. All the children attending these
activities get an annual medical check-up and free basic treatment. |
